Have you ever found yourself repeating a pattern you promised yourself you would never repeat? Maybe it shows up in your relationships, your finances, your family dynamics, your emotional responses, or even the way you see yourself.

You may have asked yourself:

“Why do I keep doing this?”

“Why does this keep happening in my family?”

“Why does this feel bigger than me?”

Sometimes, the pattern you're struggling with didn't begin with you. Families can pass down beliefs, behaviors, coping strategies, relationship dynamics, and ideas about survival from one generation to the next. We can learn what is “normal” simply by growing up around it. But recognizing a pattern doesn't mean you're destined to repeat it.

Awareness gives you the opportunity to make a different choice.

Here are seven steps you can begin exploring when you're ready to release an ancestral or generational pattern.

1. Identify the Pattern

Before you can change a pattern, you have to become conscious of it. Look at the areas of your life where you experience repetition.

Ask yourself:

  • What keeps happening in my relationships?

  • What patterns exist around money?

  • What emotions do I constantly carry?

  • What role do I always seem to play in my family?

  • Are there struggles that appear across multiple generations?

  • What do I keep experiencing even though I've consciously tried to change it?

💡 Maybe it's always being the caretaker.

💡 Maybe it's choosing emotionally unavailable partners.

💡 Maybe it's feeling responsible for everyone's happiness.

💡 Maybe it's fear around money, success, abandonment, or security.

You can't consciously release what you haven't first recognized.

2. Trace the Pattern Back

Once you've identified a recurring pattern, ask yourself:

“Did this begin with me?”

Explore your family history.

What did your parents experience?

What did your grandparents experience?

Are there similar stories, beliefs, behaviors, or family roles appearing across generations?

You may notice patterns involving:

  • abandonment

  • financial instability

  • addiction

  • secrecy

  • sacrifice

  • relationship difficulties

  • emotional responsibility

  • family conflict

  • fear and survival

The purpose isn't to blame your parents, grandparents, or ancestors.

It's to understand the context in which the pattern developed.

3. Understand What the Pattern Was Protecting

This is where ancestral work can become much deeper. A behavior that looks unhealthy today may have developed as a way of coping, surviving, belonging, or protecting someone within a particular family environment.

So instead of only asking:

“What's wrong with me?”

Try asking:

“What was this pattern trying to accomplish?”

  • What did it help someone survive?

  • What did it protect them from?

  • What did it allow them to avoid?

  • What did the family learn to believe because of their circumstances?

Understanding the function of a pattern doesn't mean you have to continue it.

It allows you to approach yourself with curiosity instead of shame.

4. Separate Their Story From Yours

One of the most powerful shifts you can make is recognizing:

✨ You can honor what your family survived without continuing to live it.

✨ You can love your family.

✨ You can understand your family.

✨ You can respect your history.

✨ And you can still choose something different.

Your family history can explain certain patterns without having to determine your future.

Connection does not require repetition.

5. Challenge the Belief Beneath the Pattern

Patterns often have a belief underneath them.

For example:

“Money is hard to keep.”→ Money can be managed, received, and retained.

“I have to take care of everyone.”→ I can care for others without abandoning myself.

“This is just how our family is.”→ I am allowed to create a different way.

“Success will separate me from my family.”→ I can grow while still honoring where I came from.

Ask yourself:

“What belief am I ready to stop carrying?”

Sometimes the behavior isn't the deepest layer.

The belief underneath the behavior is.

6. Create a New Response

Awareness is powerful—but awareness alone doesn't necessarily create change.

When the old pattern appears, pause.

Instead of automatically responding the way you always have, ask:

“What would I choose if I weren't responding from the old family script?”

✅ Then make one different choice.

✅ Set the boundary.

✅ Have the difficult conversation.

✅ Receive instead of constantly giving.

✅ Allow yourself to succeed.

✅ Choose a healthier relationship dynamic.

✅ Say no without explaining yourself.

👉 A new pattern is built through repeated new responses.

7. Integrate the Change

Releasing an ancestral pattern isn't about pretending the past never happened.

It's not about rejecting your family.

And it doesn't mean you will never feel triggered by the old pattern again.

Integration means you develop a different relationship with what you've inherited.

You may still remember.

You may still feel.

You may still love the people who came before you.

But the old pattern no longer has to automatically dictate your choices.

That is where conscious change begins.

You Don't Have to Carry Everything You Came From

Ancestral work isn't about finding someone to blame.

It's about becoming conscious of what has been repeated—and deciding what you want to do with that awareness.

👉 You can honor your history without repeating it.

👉 You can understand the past without living inside it.

👉 You can love your family without carrying every pattern forward.

And perhaps the most important question isn't simply:

“What did I inherit?”

It's:

“What am I ready to release?” 🧿

This Is Where My Work Goes Deeper

This is the foundation of how I approach ancestral and emotional pattern work.
