Pope Francis Death Explained by Vedic Astrology

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936 at 9pm, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Elected in 2013, he is the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. Known for his humility, focus on social justice, and emphasis on mercy, he has become a global voice for the poor, the environment, and interfaith dialogue.
According to Vedic Sidereal Astrology, for death to occur, the individual must be running a planetary mahadasha cycle that activates death energy. In Pope Francis’s chart, at the time of his passing, he was in the Venus–Venus–Rahu period (mahadasha, antardasha, pratyantardasha) seen under Vimshottari in the birth chart. His Venus mahadasha began in October 2023.
Now here’s where it gets significant—Venus rules both his 5th and 12th houses, and it’s placed in his 8th house, which is the house of death and transformation. On top of that, Rahu was active as the pratyantardasha and sits in his 7th house, which is a maraka (death-inflicting) house. The lords of his maraka houses are Moon and Jupiter.
Even though Venus isn’t the lord of his 2nd or 7th house, it gains death-inflicting potential because it sits in the 8th and is placed in Shravana nakshatra, which is ruled by the Moon—his 2nd house maraka lord. Not only that, his natal Moon is conjunct natal Venus in Shravana as well. So the Moon’s rulership and nakshatra activation tie in directly to his maraka houses. This shows clear energetic alignment with death.
What’s more, on the actual day of his passing, he was running Rahu as his pratyantardasha, and Rahu is activating his 7th house—another maraka house.
It’s astrologically accurate to say that Pope Francis passed due to complications from double pneumonia. But what’s fascinating is how the transit and dashas confirmed it.
On the day he died, transit Moon and transit Pluto were both at 9°, tightly conjunct, and falling into his natal Venus at 14° and natal Moon at 19°—all in his 8th house of death. Transit Jupiter was at 25°, forming a close trine to his natal Mars at 26° in the 4th house. Mars rules his 6th house of health and illness. And while Jupiter is often seen as a benefic, it also has the power to expand and magnify whatever it touches—including karmic endings. The entire alignment points to a destined and divinely-timed departure.
